He co-founded Opsware (formerly known as Loudcloud), which created the datacenter automation software market and which was in 2007 acquired by Hewlett-Packard Co. In 1994 he co-founded Netscape, a pioneer in today’s commercial Internet which in 1998 was acquired by America Online. He subsequently served as chief technology officer of AOL until 1999. He is well known as the co-author of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser. Also is a director of eBay Inc. and Facebook Inc.
